Day 6 – Jerry’s 70th Birthday Dinner at Azul Histórico
Neighborhood: Centro Histórico
Our last night in Mexico City couldn’t have been more perfect. After a full day of exploring with our guide and friend Hugo, we called an Uber to take us to dinner — and who should pull up but Hugo himself, smiling like he knew he’d just made our night. He wove us through the glowing city streets toward Azul Histórico, a restaurant that captures the soul of Mexico in every detail – a place to celebrate Jerry’s 70th birthday in true Mexican style.
Located inside a restored 17th-century palace in the city’s historic center, Azul Histórico is built around a breathtaking open-air courtyard filled with towering trees, soft lanterns, and the scent of marigolds drifting through the air. The space was dressed in vibrant orange flowers and calaveras for the October and Día de Muertos season — elegant, festive, and full of life.
We started the evening with cocktails, mezcal, margaritas, and a lovely Mexican wine, settling into our table beneath the trees in the heart of the courtyard. The service was flawless — a small army of waiters appearing and disappearing with quiet precision and endless warmth.
The meal itself was a celebration of flavor:
• Gorditas jalapeñas – warm, spicy pockets of heaven
• Tamalito de rajas – soft masa filled with roasted peppers and cheese
• Chipotle Amor – smoky, rich, and utterly indulgent
• Enchiladas de mole poblano – deep, complex, and pure tradition on a plate
We ended with three different desserts, including Jerry’s favorite — a tres leches pastel brought out with a candle and a chorus of waiters singing Las Mañanitas. He was glowing, and so were we.
Dinner was laughter, stories, and the kind of friendship not only that feels like family but is family. When we finally said goodbye to the courtyard and caught a ride back to Condesa, David chatted away in Spanish with the driver while the rest of us quietly translated and smiled.
A perfect meal, a perfect night, and the perfect birthday for Jerry — the heart of our little bear family.
“Donde hay amor, hay vida.
